Dragon, The Firstborn of the Gods
Dragons
Average Lifespan
2000 years
Origin or Ancestry
The first creations of the Ilhuicahuatin, born before the Humans or even before Desolation was seeded with plants and animals, their design was focused around strength and power. They were granted the ability to use Arcanum, unlike their younger siblings amongst the divine. This power granted to them was in hopes that they would be able to join the Ilhuicahuatin in future fights against the Forebearer.
Geographic Distribution
Dragons live all across the Aether and within The Mooring. Within The Mooring, most live on Creation's Rest due to its more favorable conditions, but they have been setting up dens everywhere from the Core of The Mooring to the Elemental Halos to the Outermost layers past the Leviant Shield. Aspect Dragons are the only ones that live outside of The Mooring alone, with very few sightings of them entering.
Related Races
While the Dragons themselves were created unique by the Ilhuicahuatin and are only directly related to each other, the Dragonling were partially inspired by them and many of their Reptilian traits are copies of those in Dragons. Additionally, The Mooring has created several replicas of Dragons in the form of various "false dragons".
Anatomy and Morphology
Dragon anatomy is very similar to that of a cat or a dog, with four limbs, a tail, and for males, a singular neck extending outward connecting to their head and sensory organs. Breeding capable females, commonly referred to as Dragon Mothers, have two heads. Within their upper chest cavity lies extra organs used to produce the element of their affinity to be pushed out through their breath weapons, but the exact process that turns Arcanum into these elemental forms is unknown.
Breeding Females, known as Dragon Mothers, have slightly different anatomy in that have two necks and heads coming out from their collar. Each of the heads also features distinct affiliations, giving them two associated dragons types while other Dragons only have one. This allows a single Dragon to populate two different types, allowing for more stable numbers.
Chromatic
Chromatic Dragons are grouped by their scales texture being more leather like and being colored almost entirely in a single color along the spectrum of visible light. The Chromatic Dragon Affinities are: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink, Black, Brown, White, and Gray.
Metallic
Metallic Dragons are grouped through the properties of their scales matching the properties and appearance of metals. Metallic Dragons are also able to consume their respective metallic affinity in place of other foods. Metallic Dragon Affinities are: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper, Brass, Mercury, Iron, Steel, Platinum, Chromium, Cobalt, Nickel, and Tungsten
Gemstone
Gem Dragons are grouped by identifying the color and refraction of light through their horns which take on a gem-like quality. While most Gem Dragons have the color associated with the Gemstone that matches their affinity, there are cases of Gem Dragons having colors that do not match the common coloration of their Gem Affinity and the refraction of light is the only way to properly classify them. Gem Dragon Affinities are: Amethyst, Emerald, Sapphire, Diamond, Topaz, Jade, Crystal, Obsidian, Ruby, and Quartz.
Aspect Dragons
Aspect Dragons are Dragons that don't fit into the other categories of Chromatic, Metallic, or Gemstone Dragons. They typically embody affinities for things that are less material in nature, such as time or energy.
Perception and Sensory or Extra Sensory Capabilities
Darkvision and Blindsight within a short distance are standard extra senses for Dragons. Some variants do have Electroreception or Thermoception, or in rare cases Truesight. Rare variants can also have even less common sensory abilities than these. Dragons also all have a high sensitivity toward Arcanum, being able to find locations that have higher concentrations to help power the conversion of eaten food into fuel for their breath weapons.
Genetics and Reproduction
All Dragon Mothers are female and they mate with other dragons of the same general type: Chromatic, Metallic, Gemstone, or Aspect. Usually, they mate with male Dragons that have no matching sub-types which allows for all three types to be represented within their offspring. They lay anywhere from 50 to 150 eggs and guard the nest until they hatch, and once hatched the mother forces them out into the world. Typically, only 40% make it to breeding age and 10% of those reach the end of their growth cycle.
Growth Rate and Stages
Dragons remain in eggs for around a year before hatching. After that they progressively get larger, with their growth stages being determined by a mix of size and power. Hatchlings are the first stage, and are small to the point of being commonly mistaken for baby Kobolds or other young False Dragons. As hatchlings, they are fairly weak and incapable of most things one would expect of a dragon.
It takes roughly five years before they reach a large enough size to be classified as Wyrmlings. Wyrmlings are roughly the same size as Dragonlings and have developed enough to utilize their breath weapons. During this period of their life, they have become strong enough to require a handful of trained Mercenaries to slay them. Additionally, Wyrmlings are highly territorial amongst each other, as they work to gather constant amounts of food to continue growing.
After surviving for around 50 years, Dragons have grown large enough to be classified as Young Dragons. Young Dragons are large creatures that can single highhandedly defeat small armies and require groups of strong Mercenaries to attempt to slay them. Young Dragons are less territorial than Wyrmlings, only taking complete control over a lone den that they make into their home. The areas between dens are communal hunting grounds shared between dozens of Young Dragons. During this phase, they begin to communicate with one another and become fluent in Primal Draconic through these interactions.
Dragons, after around 300 Years, become strong enough and large enough to be classified as Adult Dragons. At this stage, they are capable of Breeding and often head out in search of Dragon Mothers. Some begin to intermingle with other Tonallitecameh nearby their den, often to the point of learning newer languages. Their ability to use Arcanum has grown to the point of permeating the areas around their dens. These changes are what often lead them to being hunted down when they fail to create good relations with others by their dens.
After living for over 1000 years, a Dragon is large enough to be classified as an Ancient Dragon. Ancient Dragons are the apex of Dragons, and their presence can lead to Wyrmlings and Young Dragons to vacate entire regions. Ancient Dragons, when hostile, can require the entire power of a small nation's army to force out of their homes let alone take down. Attempting to take one down is often viewed as a death wish amongst Mercenaries.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Dragons are predominantly carnivores. They can eat anything as they are omnivores, but their preference for meat is noted as a species wide tendency with an exception for Metallic and Gemstone variants preferring metals and gems respectively.
Racial Customs
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Most Dragons speak Primal Draconic alone, but some have spent time to learn other languages such as the Common for the continent of their home or the local language of a nearby village or country.
