Origin or Ancestry

Ashanders are descendants of Humans much like the other Ilhuicapan. However, unlike the other Ilhuicapan, they are direct descendants of the Hym rather than cousin races. During the escape from Desolation as the Forebearer reawakened during the change between the Fifth and Sixth Sun, Humans slowly evolved into the Hym on board the scattered Ark Vessels that were launched into The Abyss. As some of those Ships arrived within The Mooring, while many landed upon Creation's Rest, some landed within Infernus. The Hym upon those Ark Vessels utilized the remaining 5th Sun Technology that they could to alter their genetics to allow them to survive within their new home.

Geographic Distribution

Infernus, while not the most hospitable location for life to take hold, is where the largest population of Ashlanders remains. They build settlements along the seas of lava both to take advantage of the light and the versatility of the terrain. They're fairly common across Creation's Rest as well, appearing nearly in the same amount of locations that the Hym can be found in, with higher quantities settling around the warmer areas of the land.

Ashlanders, along with Aquari, are direct descendants of the Hym, using 5th Sun Technology to allow them to survive harsh new environments following the flight from Desolation. 5th Sun Technology, being responsible for the creation of the Shifters and Beast Heart utilizing Humans as the base make them cousin races. The Human creation of the Gearborn also ties them to the Ashlanders, albeit much more distantly.

Anatomy and Morphology

As Hym modified extensively by 5th Sun Technology, Ashlanders are fairly similar in appearance. Smooth skin and hairless bodies with moderate muscle strung across a skeletal frame built for endurance. Like the Hym, Ashlanders sport hair extruding from the tops of their head; more tightly curled than that of the Hym, it helps protect their heads while also preventing moisture escape it. Ashlanders also feature the enlarged Thyroids that have become standard and allow for the utilization of Arcanum energy.

Ashlanders sport much larger lungs compared to the other Human descendant races, mostly to allow for biological filters to prevent the sulfuric air of Infernus from harming them. This leads to them appearing more muscled on their upper and mid-chest. Their skin is a the color of ash colored stone, with varying tones of gray, allowing them to blend in amongst the rocky terrain.

Perception and Sensory or Extra Sensory Capabilities

Ashlanders feature the ability to internally store and utilize Arcanum that drifts throughout their environment from the Aether and use it as Magic. Just like the Hym and the other Ilhuicapan, the energy is stored within their Thyroid within their lower neck. They also have developed keep eyesight within dim light conditions due to the natural environment of Infernus.

Ecology and Habitat

Ashlanders are like the Hym in settling anywhere they can, but due to the conditions of Infernus there settlement locations are fairly limited as is. They have had less luck historically compared to the other races as Infernus is one of the most difficult to adapt to and survive within. Their bodies produce less latent heat for itself and relies more on the environment, so across Creation's Rest they try to stay within the warmer regions of the world. They can live in colder areas, such as the Frost Touched Wastes of Ignaldi, but require a much greater food intake in addition to clothes to help them retain heat.

Dietary Needs and Habits

While omnivores, Infernus is very scarce in terms of edible plants, and thus their diet has mostly come to consist of meats. They have little sense of taste so tend to season foods with whatever they can find, which leads to most of their cultural cuisine to being poisonous or inedible to other races. When plants are available, they often can be found consuming those deemed poisonous because they have a "better taste profile" to them.

Racial Customs

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Having originally spoken Old Hymic on their arrival to The Mooring, they slowly developed their own language by merging portions of Ignan into Old Hymic, creating what is now known as Ashlander. Ashlander remains similar to many other Hymic languages, and remains within that language family. Due to the size of Infernus being roughly the same size as the continents of Creation's Rest, Ashlander is near universally spoken along with Ignan.

Myths and Legends

The Ashlanders, much as all the descendants of the Humans breach The Mooring, their ancient history is littered with the remnants of stories of cities built of steel and class. This world was controlled by them, dominated by them, until it awoken to swallow entire portions of their civilization whole. They fled into the abyss in ships made of silver propelled by flame, and eventually made way from their abandoned home to within The Mooring. Separated from other groups of survivors, they landed in Infernus and used the last of their 5th Sun Technology to make it possible to survive without the technology that had gotten them here. Leaving the ships, changed for this new world, they watched as they sank into the seas of lava to melt down into nothing.

Common Customs and Observed Traditions

A custom among Ashlanders is in regards to cloaks and outerwear. In Infernus, most people keep few layers of clothing due to the warmth, but the outermost layer is almost universally a leather cloak. Taking off ones cloak, to Ashlanders used to the lifestyle of Infernus, is a signal that one intends to stay long term and signifies closeness to the host of owner of an establishment. Taking ones outer cloak off without receiving permission is viewed as demanding they treat you like family, or is used as a way to announce joining a family. For other Tonallitecameh not able to breathe the air of Infernus, the same is often extended to the breathing apparatuses they use.
