Origin or Ancestry

Aquari are descendants of Humans much like the other Ilhuicapan. However, unlike the other Ilhuicapan, they are direct descendants of the Hym rather than cousin races. During the escape from Desolation as the Forebearer reawakened during the change between the Fifth and Sixth Sun, Humans slowly evolved into the Hym on board the scattered Ark Vessels that were launched into The Abyss. As some of those Ships arrived within The Mooring, while many landed upon Creation's Rest, some landed within Aqueous. The Hym upon those Ark Vessels utilized the remaining 5th Sun Technology that they could to alter their genetics to allow them to survive within their new home.

Geographic Distribution

With Aqueous as their home, most Aquari live in settlements scattered beneath its endless seas. Some have migrated to Creation's Rest and build communities in the seas near the larger coastal cities that dot across the continents. They can move onto land and have over time, but their preference for living underwater has stifled this movement.

Aquari, along with Ashlanders, are direct descendants of the Hym, using 5th Sun Technology to allow them to survive harsh new environments following the flight from Desolation. 5th Sun Technology, being responsible for the creation of the Shifters and Beast Heart utilizing Humans as the base make them cousin races. The Human creation of the Gearborn also ties them to the Aquari, albeit much more distantly.

Anatomy and Morphology

As Hym modified extensively by 5th Sun Technology, Aquari are fairly similar in appearance. Smooth skin and hairless bodies with moderate muscle strung across a skeletal frame built for endurance. Like the Hym, Aquari sport hair extruding from the tops of their head, however for Aquari it seldom grows near the napes of their neck. Aquari also feature the enlarged Thyroids that have become standard and allow for the utilization of Arcanum energy.

Aquari skin is on a spectrum of light grey to a deep blue, mimicking the oceanic environment they call home. It produces a slight mucus like coating that helps reduce drag under water. Their eyes have an additional inner eyelid to help protect them under water, and they have skin webbing between their fingers and toes. Their feet are also slightly wider and flatter to better push water. Gills decorate their lower neck interwoven with their trapezius muscles, allowing them to breathe under water. When in use, a flap within their neck closes to prevent water from entering the lungs.

Perception and Sensory or Extra Sensory Capabilities

Aquari feature the ability to internally store and utilize Arcanum that drifts throughout their environment from the Aether and use it as Magic. Just like the Hym and the other Ilhuicapan, the energy is stored within their Thyroid within their lower neck. Beyond that, the ability to breathe and see underwater are unique modifications that have aided in their survival since arriving within Aqueous. Their ability to see underwater has grown overtime to an ability to see in dim and dark conditions without light sources, an adaption that opened up the deepest portion of Aqueous to settlement.

Ecology and Habitat

Much like the Hym they descend from, Aquari are rather tenacious in expanding and colonizing new areas they believe they can settle within. Aquari are specifically preferential to Aquatic Environments, however across Creation's Rest they have made landfall in several places that are more humid, regardless of temperature. They tend to avoid drier locations to prevent their mucus layer from drying out quickly and harming them long term.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Aquari are Omnivores and will eat nearly anything they can. However, millennia living on Aqueous has pushed their diets to favor Fish which they substitute with kelp and other sea-greens that they have grown accustomed to cultivating. The dried meats common in rations across Creation's Rest are near inedible in their base form due to their lack of moisture and salt content, leading those who eat them to end up with severe indigestion.

Racial Customs

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Having originally spoken Old Hymic on their arrival to The Mooring, they slowly developed their own language by merging portions of Aquan into Old Hymic, creating Oclenin (Ocean Speak). Oclenin remains similar to many other Hymic languages, and remains within that language family. Due to the size of Aqueous being roughly the same size as the continents of Creation's Rest, Oclenin is near universally spoken along with Auran and Auric Stoutan. Aquari that settle on Creation's Rest typically learn the language most commonly spoken in the land settlements closest to them.

Myths and Legends

As all descendants of the Humans that arrived within The Mooring, the Aquari have a tale about their origin that tells of a world covered in spires of steel and glass. The dominated this world, destroyed vast swathes of it for their own gain, eventually leading the world to strike back against them. They fled this home in ships of silver powered by flame, and spent eons adrift within the abyss above their abandoned home. Eventually, they discovered The Mooring, and eventually breached its outer layers. During the decent, they ended up crashing into a vast ocean, Aqueous, and unable to reach out for help from the others who were making the journey with them they remained. They utilized the last of the technology carried with them to allow them to survive with ease in their new home, and fled the ships as the sank to the bottom to disappear amongst the depths.
