Magic Classification

Types of Magic

While Magic can either be Leviant or Arcanic in nature, spells can be cast regardless of the Magic Energy used to cast them. Because of this, types of magic and the classification of spells instead looks at the writing that forms the basis of the spell and encodes the instructions for it.

As such, Magic can be defined within several types and subtypes:

  • Expressed Magic, consisting of Classical Magic and its various artistic forms as well as Rune Magic and how they encode instructions for the energy base to derive the result from
  • Innate Magic, comprising of a direct pulling upon the energy rather than encoding instructions for it to utilize
  • Experience Magic, or Magic of the Soul, is from when one utilizes the energy, or experience, stored within Souls to create Magical effects rather than relying on Arcanum or Leviance

Classical Magic

The classical magic system involves describing spells through identifying the effect via several main groupings, referred to as schools. Each spell is also assigned sub-groupings, elemental, and occupational groupings. Each elemental group is a subgroup, with the distinction being made only for the sake of quickly identifying which Leviance Band the spell draws from while using Leviance Magic; if the caster uses Arcanum Based Magic instead as the source, the same groupings can apply to identify related elemental affinity and modulating locations. Occupational Groupings are used to identify the general type of caster that would be able to use a spell practically.

Rune magic

Runes are a derived form of magical writing that compresses the instructions that would be represented via nodes within the classical system by creating characters that represent the values expressed in the root matrices.

Rune Magic form of magical writing similar to the process of inscribing scrolls for Leviance Magic. Many different Rune systems exist, commonly popping up in cultures of Cuallicallimeh that originate under the surface of Creation's Rest. Stoutmorin Runes are an exception to this typical standard of origin. These symbols are typically engraved within surfaces, but can also be painted to imbue an object with a spell's energy. Rune Magic follows the same main classifications as Classical Magic, however all rune magic also has the "Rune" grouping, implying that the spell instruction cannot be used outside of a runic capacity. Rune magic is difficult for those who specialize in Classical Magic to translate back into a base spell, furthermore one who is knowledgable in Rune Carving may not even know how Magic works under the runes, and merely memorized the runes needed and their effects.

Runes are Triggered by Touch after being inscribed. Additionally, they are not magically concealed and can be easily identified by anyone with knowledge of magic and its general structure, even if they do not know what the Magic effect produced would be.

"Soul" Magic or Experience Magic

Soul Magic, or Experience Magic, is Magic rooted in the experience that is stored within the soul of all the Tonallitecameh. Some Divine Beings also have the ability to utilize Soul Magic, even though they do not have souls. Using Soul Magic causes damage to the person whos soul is being utilized for the magic in question. Most commonly used to bolster Classical Magic in strength or duration, it can also be used in a matter similar to Innate Magic if one becomes proficient enough in it. Using Soul Magic frequently enough can lead to the caster earning the ire of some of the Ilhuicani, most specifically Nellayotlni as it blessed the Tonallitecameh with souls and views this as a transgression against it.

Innate Magic

Innate Magic varies from all other types of Magic due to the fact that it has no instruction base, instead utilizing ones own will to force Arcanum or Leviance into a resulting effect. Those able to use magic innately, are deeply intertwined with one of the two sources, or has some aspect of divinity and has mastered their connection with Magic. Innate Magic has no warning for it to occur, no precursor, it just happens.
