History

Peg legs are most commonly seen on Mercenaries and Sailors, in addition to regular commoners, and are a sign of a hasty healing after a grave injury to a leg. In the rare injuries that cannot be healed with magic, they are the cheapest way to allow a person to retain mobility.

Significance

They signify survival from an event that cost someone their leg and potentially could have cost them their life. While many with them are impaired and unable to perform at the same level they could before, their determination to continue on after such an injury is often seen as being blessed or protected by the gods by those around them.

Features/Description

Although maimed, you’ve learned to live with your impediment and gain the following benefits and penalties:

  • Your walking speed is reduced by 5 feet, to a minimum of 10 feet.
  • You have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks when dealing with sailors.
  • When you spend an evening in a tavern or meeting place frequented by sailors, you hear various rumors regarding local shipping. The GM must pepper these rumors with three pieces of information relevant to you, above and beyond those you might have gained from a skill check made to gather information.
  • You have disadvantage on stealth checks, due to the sound of the wood hitting the ground.
  • You have disadvantage on athletics checks to swim, and your swimming speed is reduced by half.

Construction

Materials and Components

The most common materials a peg leg is constructed of is wood and iron. An iron rod is drilled into the bones of the leg and modified to have a screw at the exposed end. The wood of the peg is usually partially hollowed out to allow for a small storage container within and is attached to the metal rod by being screwed on.
